Since Patagonia opened up the patent for Yulex, it is very encouraging to see more brands bringing garments to the market using Yulex to replace traditional neoprene. We all want to enjoy the ocean as best we can and with as little impact as possible.
Colin and I are always looking for ways to make our own time in the water more sustainable and to offer our customers the option too, so we are very excited about the arrival of the Zone3 Yulex Swimwear Range.
Here is why in a nutshell and for those of you who would like to know more about Yulex, there's more detailed information on the material at the end.

5 Reasons why we love the Zone3 Yulex Swimwear Range:
1. Sustainable alternative to neoprene
Yulex is a natural, plant-based rubber sourced from the Havea tree while boasting many of the same features of traditional neoprene. This makes it a great alternative for wetsuits and other swimwear.
Zone3 say that by using plant-based rubber they are dramatically reducing the garments CO2 emissions by up to 80% which is an amazing result.
2. Flexibility
The material used for the Zone3 Yulex swimwear range features low profile flatlock seams and ergonomic designs offer unrestricted movement and comfort allowing for complete freedom in the water.
3. 100% Recycled Polyester Outer and Inner Fabric.
Both the inside and outside or the garments in the range are lined wtih 100% recycled materials. The durable recycled polyester fabric further enhances the garments’ eco credentials. The lining also adds a super soft touch to the range.
4. 1.5mm Yulex Natural Rubber
With 1.5mm thickness the new Yulex Swimwear range provides warmth and protection from the elements while allowing the wearer to move freely, whatever the activity.
5. No compromise on Performance
Yulex® achieves the same performance and longevity as traditional neoprene but without a negative impact on the environment, an important factor when deciding for a Yulex® garment.
The new Zone3 open water swimwear is:
- Lightweight
- High-stretch
- Durable
And offers the same buoyancy, insulation against the cold and UV resistance as comparable neoprene suits.
What is Yulex?
Yulex® is a natural plant-based rubber source from the Havea tree. The sap of the tree is purified, refined and made into Yulex® dry solid rubber. This material can then be moulded and sliced to a desired thickness and laminated, ready to be manufactured into wetsuits and other items.
Technical Information
Yulex® is a plant-based, high performance elastomeric foam with a closed-cell structure that allows for minimal water absorption and supportive buoyancy. The manufacturing process is made easier due to its diverse properties. Yulex® material is easy to cut, glue and sew, a bit like standard neoprene foam but better.
